Jasper Wildcat, Purdue Boilermaker, New York Yankee, Cincinnati Bengal and Indiana Pacer fan here! They will get preferential treatment when they deserve it. I also retired as a coach of the Jasper Junior Football League after a perfect 10-0 record and Championship. No better place to go out than on top!
11 wins in a row. Combined record of those opponents....90-183. Teams in the top 50 of sagarin ratings - 1. Nothing to look at here people. Move along. reality starts February 2nd! After February 2nd, the combined record of opponents is 121-43. Starting to think the same people that puts your non-conference football schedule together had something to do with making this schedule!
Welcome to week 2 of the Indiana High School football season. In week one, Jasper defeated memorial and Southridge defeated Corydon to make the battle of dubois county an interesting game. Jasper's experience runs deep. tonight, the two headed monster (Tate Blessinger and Luke Sermersheim) rushes for 230 yards on the way to a 31-14 victory of the Raiders. Grant Theil gets his 2nd interception of the season and also runs back a kickoff for a touchdown. For Southridge, Senior Mitch Mundy grinds out 85 yards rushing. Jack Michel leads the defense with a fumble recovery and an interception.
Heritage Hills 45 Tell City 7
Heritage Hills runs all over tell City in every facet of the game. Kenton Crews scores a touchdown 4 different ways. Ethan Griepenstroh chips in 2 rushing touchdowns as the Patriots dominate this one. The Patriots defense holds the Tell City to just 54 total yards of offense. Kicker Seth Bolin is perfect on extra points and kicks a 42 yard field goal
Perry Central 27 Forest park 13
The Forest Park rangers come to play tonight and keep a game close that most people thought would be a blowout. Quarterback ben Wendholt throws for 187 yards and 2 touchdowns, both to Zach Brosmer. The defense, led by Josh Franchville, plays great all night before getting a little worn down towards the end of the game. Although a loss, the Rangers show that they will be a team to contend with this season.
Jasper 35 Evansville Memorial 3
Jasper rolls in the season opener in a matchup that use to be epic and now has become kind of a yawner. The Wildcats show that they haven't missed a beat from last year. Senior Grant Theil does it on both sides of the ball for Jasper with 7 receptions for 119 yards and 2 touchdowns. On defense, he has an interception taken back for a touchdown and 6 tackles.
Southridge 21 Corydon 7
Southridge lost a lot just like Jasper but new faces have come to shine in game 1. Southridge takes a 21-0 lead with junior Nolan O'Brien having a breakout game in his first start at running back with 2 touchdowns and 112 yards rushing. The Raider defense is tough all night and Corydon doesn't score until late in the 4th Quarter when Coach Winkler called off the dogs on defense.
Heritage Hills 24 Mt. Vernon 14
Heritage Hills is in a dogfight with a Mt. Vernon team that is going to make some noise this season. While the patriot running game is stalled, Senior Caleb Mulzer hooks up with Kenton Crews for 2 touchdown passes. with the score 17-14, Crews also returns a punt to give the Patriots some breathing room
Gibson Southern 45 Forest Park 7
The Forest Park Rangers have the tough task of taking on one of the better teams in the area on opening night. The Titans rely on all-everything Nick Sellers and he doesn't disappoint with 237 yards passing and 65 yards rushing. Forest Park's bright spot is Ben Wendholt who throws for 201 yards and even though the scoreboard doesn't show it, the rangers show promise this season.
The NCAA season is over for all of us in Indiana. I know, Louisville is still alive but most people realize that it is on the wrong side of the river. With spring, comes fresh, green leaves, nice weather and the annual spring Creaning. Before all of you Hoosier fans get in an uproar, I feel that there will be little Painting in West Lafayette this spring as well. While I do not agree with it, that is reality in the NCAA right now.
I would hate to be the parent of an IU player or recruit right now with a lot of them not knowing their future. There could be an easy solution if Cody Zeller and Victor Olidipo go pro and Maurice Creek is deamed not healthy enough to finish his career.
I have one simple question for Hoosier fans. Seeing how a big number of you feel that Zeller and Olidipo will come back after an embarassing loss to Syracuse, what is your solution to get down 3 players to the amount of scholarships allotted by the NCAA? I also want to hear your solution if the add the guard from Northwestern that recently decommitted and Crean is after as we speak.
I don't want any name calling, I just want solutions. Lets hear them!
Brandon Dawson, you are not a thug. Just because you are from the Region, does not automatically give you that title. You may call it sour grapes for him not choosing Purdue but I never wanted the guy. He is the type of player that tries to give off this ultra cool "Gangsta" personification but really can't back it up. He is the type that will be in and out of trouble if he makes it to the NBA or not.
I find it funny that the wannabe-thug threw a punch in the game vs Purdue this weekend and the guy hardly flinched. May want to work those arms out a little bit more Thug. If you are going to be a tough guy, you may need to back it up some day and right now you don't have it.
Of course, Izzo and the clown act at Michigan State are denying the incident although the BTN footage shows differently. They say they have a different camera angle that shows he chest bumped himself but MSU has released no such footage. Come on Tommy! You use to be a respected coach. Now with handlers and such involved with your program, what should we expect. I never thought I would rank a MSU coach below an IU coach as far as popularity but I can use the word integrity and Tom Crean in the same sentence. I use to be able to use that with your name until you have sold your soul lately to keep up in the arms race that is Division 1 basketball.
Winning means too much to you and you don't want to lose Dawson because doing the right thing and you don't mix right now. You don't have a chance to win the conference race anyways. That is a two horse race between Indiana and Michigan.
Any MSU backers man enough to come on our show and discuss this? Probably not but just in case there are a few, the number is (773) 897-6325. We will be on live from 11-1 to take your calls if there is a Spartan ma
Kentucky fans support their team at a level that I don't think we outsiders can understand. I mean, what other fanbase could EBAY an Ed Davender signed prison uniform for $750? The crazy thing is that there are people making offers on it!
Don't believe me? Here is the link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/KENTUCKY-WILDCATS-ED-DAVENDER-PRISON-OUTFIT-PANTS-SHIRT-JACKET-ALL-SIGNED-15-/121043136130?pt=US_Autographs&hash=item1c2ebbae82
I have thought long and hard about Festivus presents for everyone. Here is my list:
Coach K: for you Coach K, I thought long and hard and realized that your present was only obvious - a Reversible Jacket!
Kurt Gook Gutgsell : for being such a great weekly guest, I am giving you a Chicago Cub World Series Championship. This can double as a gift for my brother Steve and a multitude of other long suffering fans.
Mitch Stetter: for you I got a 100% healthy season where you light up Major League Baseball like we all know you can.
Jon Goldsberry: your present is really a present for Jett - a Jasper Wildcat Football jersey. I figure if he is going to wear Gold and Black in college, he might as well start in high school.
Tom Dienhart: your present is a weekend off on a Purdue football weekend complete with Friday night at Harry's and the Triple XXX, Saturday including a Knucklehead Tailgate and luxery box for game and Sunday to sleep off the weekend.
Don Schultheis: a Strassenfest every month for a year. We will rename it SchultheisFest.
Kevin Cartwright: a return to Jasper as Executive Producer of the Coach K and Joe Show. Getting your kids and Jett Goldsberry locked up for Jasper Football would be huge.
Michael Lewis: D1 head coach license. After learning under Brad Stevens, the school that gets Lewis will be a lucky school!
Scott Rolen: Same as Mitch Stetter
To be continued......
With The Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy, sports doesn't seem very important. When something like this happens, you get a reality check on what is important and what isn't important. I watched the Purdue game last night. Even though the play was not the greatest, I did not get upset one time.
I know just how hard it is to loss someone that is very important to you in a blink of an eye. I will always remember the call I got from my niece, Stacey telling me that my nephew, Josh Suhrheinrich had been killed in a car accident. I was numb for days.
Josh was suppose to be finishing up his junior year at Heritage Hills High School. He was suppose to be the star of the Heritage Hills Basketball team his senior year. He was suppose to be the gentle giant walking the halls of Heritage Hills High School making everyone in the school feel special by talking to them and asking them how they were doing no matter what group of friends they hung out with. He was suppose to become an adult and lead a very successful life. In one blink of an eye, all of those hopes and dreams were over.
I remember the little random phone calls I would get from him asking me questions that were on his mind. I am not even sure that his parents knew about those calls. I always looked forward to his name popping up on my phone.
I am not a parent that has lived through the kind of tragedy that the parents and family of those victims at Sandy Hook Elementary felt. I have witnessed Theresa and Boo's pain and think about them every day. But, I am an Uncle who still feels great pain for my personal loss.
The next time an officials call doesn't go your way or your team gets beat, sit back and think about if in the game of life if it is really that important. I was stressing just last week about something trivial and my wife, Liz told me, "there are a lot of other people going through far worse things than you."
I pray for the victims and survivors of Sandy Hook Elementary School. The one thing I can guarantee you is that Josh Suhrheinrich was sitting at Heavens Gates welcoming them.
1. Victor Olidipo has made himself into one heck of a player. When he first arrived at Indiana, he was just an athlete. Through hard work, he has made himself into a great basketball player. I use to laugh at the notion he would go pro after this season. I see that as a real option for him now.
2. The question isn't if Michael Lewis will be a head coach. The question is when will he be a head coach. After watching Brad Stevens as his assitant coach, whatever school chooses him will have one heck of a coach.
3. Missed free throws and poor defense at times may have cost IU the game but in my opinion it was also the periods of the game that they forgot they have the National Player of the Year on their team. They made the Kentucky game last year coloser than what it should have been by forgetting Zeller was on their team most of the second half.
4. Zeller not in at the end? Wow.
5. Who was the reporter that got Tom Crean a little mad at the press conference? He didn't seem intimidated at all.
6. I wish Purdue had Butler's Barlow instead of the one that we had. What a great story Alex Barlow is - a baseball player that wants to be a basketball coach so he walks on to the Butler Bulldog basketball team. That kid made a name for himself.
7. My favorite Butler Basketball player is Andrew Smith. My daughter Ryanne plays volleyball with his sister, Kimberly at Florida International University.
8. Maybe it is because I am such a big Double D (Dan Dakich) fan, but I will take him over Clark Kellogg anyday of the week! Kellogg forgot that Brad Stevens and Michael Lewis were on the Butler bench when he proclaimed IU the victor at the beginning of overtime.
9. Purdue's Raphael Davis needs to practice harder and smarter so that he can play more. He was electrifying, scoring 21 points in the last 10 minutes of the game.
10. If I hear Brey's mother was a pom pom girl at Purdue one more time!!!!!!
11. I think Scott Martin will have his Doctorate and still have eligibility left!
12. I was proud that the Boilermakers had some fire the last 10 minutes of the game. Maybe the freshmen have sent the right message that they need to be on the court.
13. Notre Dame's Jack Cooley is good and a great story.
With IU's success in hoops and Notre Dame's success in football, the Reversible Jacket Fans have been out in full force. I say pick one school and stop cherry picking your teams. You live with your team through thick and thin. I may have complained lately about Matt Painter but I will never switch teams because another is too cool.
What do you think? Hit the "comment" button on this page and speak your peace! Also, if you are a true reversible jacket fan, you are out of luck. It looks like they are out of stock!!!
